Visit to a Sugar Cane Factory

After saying goodbye to our Indian family in Mandya, we started heading back to Mysore when we saw this neat sugar cane factory.  Our driver stopped to ask if the owner would give us some sugar cane juice to try and not only did he do that, but he also gave us a personal tour of the place.  It was so cool!

He had also just had a new baby sheep born and some of his workers were trying to get him to nurse off his Mother but his legs were still too wobbly to stand up.

Here the owner is running the sugar cane through basically a big crusher.  It extracts the juice which comes out looking completely brownish/greenish.  Not the most appetizing color, but it tasted fantastic!

Behind Adam are all the sugar cane stalks ready to be crushed.

There were lots of sheep all over the place.  Not sure if that is to help “clean up the place” or what, but it seemed like a strange place to have sheep.

Here Naveen is showing us how the process to make sugar works.  The sugar cane juice as you can see is coming out a pipe off the wall in the back into a big round tub.  It is stirred in there and unwanted things are removed. Then its moved to the 2nd tub where it is heated and turns yellow.
It is boiled for quite some time and then moved into another large pot to cool.

If I remember right this is the cooling area.  It looks white because it was a little frothy as a batch was just put in, but it is bright yellow/orange in color.

Then after it cools it is cut up into these squares and sold in the market.  The sugar is called Goor here in India, but is basically pure sugar.

And just cause its cute.  One last picture of this little fella trying to stand up – which led to him doing the splits in all directions!
