Freezing Popcorn

Last night I had a really hard time falling asleep. I went to enrichment here in my ward in Payson and was able to help tie some fleece blankets for the Womens Crisis Center. (which was a wonderful experience, more on that later).

Afterwords I had planned to make my big trip to Wal-Mart to stock up our refrigerator since we will be having a few extra people in our house tonight and all of next week. (I’m watching one of my best friends 2 kids today and tomorrow to help them be able to focus on moving to their new house (yeah for the Jurgens!), and then my niece Abby and nephew Jackson will be here all of next week while their parents go on a cruise)

So knowing its mucho hard to take 3 kids to the store, I really wanted to avoid taking 5! 🙂 So to Wal-Mart I went, which got me home around 11:15ish. Adam was a sweetie and helped me unload and put everything away, and then even volunteered to sleep upstairs that night since he was going to be getting up oober early to play basketball and didn’t want to wake me (I have a hard time getting back to sleep once I’ve been startled awake by an alarm). However, I’m not sure if it was putting away and unloading groceries in the bitter cold or what, but I was FREEZING when I went to bed. I tried running my hands under hot water for awhile before getting into bed, and that did help, but my feet were still completely cold, and although I doubled up on blankets and bundled up in warm clothes, I still could not get my core temperature to warm up…for HOURS.

It literally took me 2-3 hours to fall asleep. I should have probably gotten up and taken a hot bath, or gotten a hot rice pack, but A) I was too tired to, and B) the thought of getting out of bed into the cold really wasn’t very appealing. Plus It seemed reasonable to think I would eventually warm up, right? So I kept persisting. But then it finally dawned on me that to keep heat in I should put something on my head. But again not wanting to get out of bed to put a hoody or hat on, I had to get creative. So in an act of desperation I ended up taking my socks off my feet and strategically placing them on my head to keep in heat! Yes, silly I know, and probably a little gross! BUT….it worked! And finally around 3 am I was able to get to sleep.

However, any of you that know me well, know that I am a sleeper. I don’t know why but I am one of those people that require at least 8 hours to function well, and daily short naps do me a world of good too.

So this morning I decided in order to have the energy and composure needed after my rough nights sleep to take care of not only my own kids but Sammy and Will as well, that It was probably essential that I get in a nap.

Normally if I do try to get in a nap, it is in the afternoons when both Harry and Dawson are sleeping and when its quiet (movie time) for Branson. (He gets one movie per day). But Dawson has been really funny about his afternoon naps recently (due to teething and having a head cold) so I decided to try to nap during Dawsons morning nap (which he does take well). So I set Branson and Harry-bob up with a movie upstairs and told them I would come up to get them after the movie was over.

Unfortunately that didn’t happen. Although I was able to get a nap in, towards the end of it Harrison decided that if they were going to be watching a movie that POPCORN should be involved. Makes sense, right? So he went into the pantry, grabbed a bag of microwave popcorn, pushed a stool over to the stove (the microwave is above it) and proceeded to push every button he could think of to get the microwave to work (mind you he is 2!)

Luckily, I am a very light sleeper and heard the beeping of the buttons and the fan above the oven come on and was able to leap out of my bed in seconds and run to the kitchen to avoid a disaster, (since the popcorn was still in its sealed plastic wrap!) I think my running and concerned look on my face REALLY scared Harrison though and he instantly began sobbing. Either that or he was Super disappointed he’d been caught before the tasty treat was done!

So we had a talk about the microwave being dangerous and a no no, and something only Mommy and Daddy touch, and then I agreed to let Harry have popcorn if he waited until Sammy and Will got there so that we could have a movie popcorn party! Luckily he was cool with that. I had to laugh at the whole situation though and Harrison’s quest for independence. I have a feeling he is going to be quite the handful as each year passes! But honestly can I expect any less? He is his mothers son! 🙂
