When Adam asked me on our first date I actually had to turn him down because I was going to be moving home for the summer to Alpine from my apartment in Provo, and knew I would be busy packing, cleaning, and moving all my stuff. However, being the kind, sweet, loving, and selfless person that he is, Adam offered to help me move for our date. I was completely impressed, but barely knew Adam and couldn’t ask him to do that for me. I felt awful about making some poor guy help me move for a date. It just didn’t feel right.
I tried to get out of it gracefully by saying, “I really don’t need the help unless you have a truck.” Thinking that for sure Adam wouldn’t have a truck since nobody really did back then. However, to my surprise Adam had purchased his first truck just months before we met. Wow. We have a friend, funny enough, that is convinced that if it wasn’t for that truck that Adam and I might not be together today!
So anyway, still feeling uncomfortable making Ad help me move for our first date, I tried back peddling. “Oh no, I’ll be fine. My brothers and Dad all have trucks. I’ll just ask one of them to help me.” He kept on insisting though, and finally convinced me when he suggested we go out after we moved my belongings with some friends of his who were playing games. So I gave in. I really did want to go out with him. He seemed like a really nice guy and I loved how soothing and kind his voice was.
The move went pretty smoothly. Adam showed up in a T-shirt, shorts, and flip flops and I wore an ugly pink tied died shirt and jeans, and knowing me I probably had my hair in braids. We got everything into the truck nicely and packed everything in well so that nothing would get damaged. As we were loading things onto Ad’s Truck though one of my next door neighbors came out of her apartment and asked Adam and I if we were siblings. We looked at each other a little confused, and told her no. “Do we look alike?” we asked. “No,” she said…”you sound alike!” We thought that was pretty weird and teased that either I had a very masculine voice or Adam had a very feminine one! đ
On the way to Alpine it was getting to be dinner time, so as a thank you to Adam I insisted he stop at Arby’s in American Fork (which was his favorite fast food place at the time) where I would buy him dinner.
When we got to my parents in Alpine we started unloading all my stuff. One item in particular was an over sized door mirror I had bought shortly after I returned from my mission that we had wrapped in a heavy quilt. But unfortunately for me, it fell over and broke as we were moving other items out of the truck that were supporting it. So that was the first mirror Adam and I broke together.
Over the years Adam and I have reflected on that incident and often tease that some of the crazy adventures that we’ve had are due to the 7 years of bad luck we brought upon ourselves on that glorious first date. We even decided since we had bad luck anyway, that we would get married on Friday the 13th! đ
So today this story came to my mind today when I received an email from the ebay seller I had purchased our new camera from. As you might recall from my previous post entitled “One C-R-A-Z-Y Day,” the first camera I purchased a few weeks ago ended up being from a total internet scammer company that would do the old bait and switch gig. So I called up and after being transfered or put on hold 6 times, and hung up on once, I was finally able to cancel that order. So then I got busy looking for another camera, and found the one I wanted on ebay BRAND NEW for a really good deal from a power seller that had a 99% rating. So I felt confident that this transaction would go well. He had no negative comments about him and had sold thousands of items.
However, after almost a week of waiting, I still had received no confirmation that my new camera had shipped. So I wrote the seller and asked him if he could send me the tracking number. I heard nothing. I waited another couple of days, but still nothing. So then I logged into my ebay account in an effort to find more information about contacting the seller, and discovered a note saying that the seller had refunded my money? What the? I was completely confused. And I felt really upset that the seller had sold me something he wasn’t willing to send. I again felt like I was being taken. I sent a not so friendly email to the seller, and within minutes got an email back saying that when the seller had gone to ship the camera that he couldn’t get the lenses to open and therefore didn’t want to send me a defective camera. It was his last one, so he just decided to refund my money. Wow. So in a matter of 2 weeks, both the camera’s I have purchased have fallen through. That just seems like bad luck! And made me wonder if that lovely mirror we broke all those years ago is still hanging its black storm cloud over our heads. đ But then again I can’t imagine that that would be the case when we are so blessed and happy in so many other ways. I thought I would share the story though since it really is one of those things that make you go hmmmmm. (Name that song). đ
Things that make you go hmm by c&c music factory. It was later found out the female in the group was lip syncing!
Cute! What afun first date story.
