The next stop on our agenda was to go and see Carvao Grove Cave. We had heard about this cave from a gal at the rental car place who said it is the only volcano in the world that hasn’t collapsed on itself thereby allowing you to see the volcano from the inside out. It sounded pretty intriguing but honestly I wasn’t expecting much since I have become sort of a cave snob. I guess that is what happens when you are exposed to world famous caves on your mission in Slovenia. It just makes other caves look pretty lame. So I didn’t have high hopes for this cave and very low expectations.
A few gorgeous views we saw while driving over to Carvao Cave.
Once you arrive at the parking lot to the cave you walk into what looks to be a very small house built into the mountain, but in reality its actually a much larger building that goes underground for quite sometime before getting to the cave. And it included a gift shop! Who’d a’ thunk? Adam and I thought the tunnels and lights were a pretty cool touch!
The cave itself was AMAZING! It went far and above my expectations and really was very very cool! When you first walk in, its just massive and has stairs going down into a huge cavern.
But then you look up and also see the hole where the Lava and steam came up.
Here’s another shot looking up at the hole.
Then once you get down to the bottom of the first cavern, the cave opens up to a whole bunch of other large caverns as well. All with really neat and colorful walls.
Looking up at the volcano hole again.
Check out those colors and patterns! So interesting.
Another view of the hole further down the cave.
Check out these cave arches? They were ginormous and so pretty and colorful!
It really was such an incredible cave and probably one of my absolute favorites I’ve been to. Definitely ranks right up there with Skocjan and Postojna caves in Slovenia. Such an awesome place!
