Gruta De Natal (Christmas Cave) – Terceira Azores

The next stop on our itinerary was to go through the cave at Gruta De Natal. It had been closed the first time we had visited a few days earlier and had very limited visiting hours (only 3 days a week for a few hours), so we wanted to make sure we hit it at just the right time.
Gruta De Natal (better known as the Christmas Cave) was created after an eruption of the nearby volcano of Pico De Gaspar (Gaspars peak) – which just so happens to be the volcano we got lost on a few days earlier! I couldn’t help but snap a few more pictures of Gaspar peak as we drove by to help me remember the crazy adventure we had up there!
See the fence along the bottom of the volcano? That was the trail I THOUGHT we’d eventually run into, but we ended up never getting anywhere near it!

A little better view of the terrain we got lost in. We were fine once we got out of the jungle area and into the grassy area, but that jungle area was HARSH!

Here is a close up of the brush, trees, and jungle we hiked in when we got lost. We were right smack dab in the middle of that trying to find a way down!

The cave was actually 1/2 block away from Peak Gaspar so we drove over and parked and then were given helmets and instructions after we paid. Love my cute Adam decked out in his cave gear! 😉

I ended up being so glad they gave us helmets because I bumped my head like 3 times while in the cave!

I’m guessing this room is why they call it the Christmas cave? Lots of red and green!

To end the tour you had to go through a small little opening where they had a bar for you to use to help you keep stable.

It was a fun little excursion!
