Branch Sports Day & Fun at the Mall

On Saturday we had originally planned to go out of town to explore another part of India, but we had heard our shipment from America had arrived and so we thought we might receive it that weekend so we changed our plans.  We should have known better because here we are on Wednesday and we STILL have not had our shipment delivered.  As we are learning very quickly –  India is notorious for delays and it is rare for something to be done or delivered on schedule.  What can ya do?
Our friends the Blairs had invited us to go to a combined branch sports day activity out in Whitefield (about a 45 minute to hour drive), and so last minute on Saturday we decided to head over and join up with them. Unfortunately though the Blairs ended up having a change of plans so we didn’t actually get to see them, but we really enjoyed getting to know some of the members in the different branches.  The activity was set up so that there was a big sports competition where different branches could compete against each other in sports like badmitton, ping pong (they call it table tennis), volleyball, or darts.  It was really fun but the competition lasted 8 HOURS, (apparently its a big deal here) but having four impatient children, we only lasted about 2 before the kids got hungry and bored and were ready to go.  And lets be honest.  So was I! 🙂

A tour of Bangalores first church building which was finished just a few months ago.  We don’t attend this branch and therefore don’t come to this building, but I love that the church is growing in India and has its own church house!  So awesome!

The 8 hour sports competition is a very big deal and came complete with its own trophies!

I’m not sure but I think the church owns this building as well.  When Elder Holland was here visiting in March they had a lot of their meetings here.  I know the church is building a new mission home nearby so maybe the mission home will be in it?  I’ll have to inquire more about what happens in this building. 🙂

A view of some of the other buildings next door.  Pretty cool.

Once again our awesome driver Naveen surprised us by bringing us some different Indian fruits to try (he does this a lot and pays for them every time and won’t let us pay him back).  I don’t remember what these were called, but they were SO good.  The kids all loved them too.  He also brought us a smaller purple fruit that looked a little larger than a purple grape that was super sour.  Adam and I didn’t really care for those but the kids loved them!  These yellow fruits though had two small brown seeds in the middle.  You eat the outside and throw the seeds out.

At the Phoenix mall.  The kids wanted a picture with the big Chile.  We didn’t eat here though and went to the restaurant next door to it.

At the United Grill which was actually a sports bar that apparently just opened up 4 days before we went.  Because of this, at the end of our lunch the waiter told us that all our food was ON THE HOUSE!  Say what?  Apparently here in India new upscale restaurants don’t charge people for the first little while as people are just trying them out.  We were totally shocked and suprised by this but so appreciative of a free dinner.  Especially considering we had gotten me a Filet Mignon for lunch!  They ended up also bringing us out a chocolate lava cake and a brownie with ice cream.  DELISH.  We will definitely be going back to this place again JUST for dessert.  A taste of home was so nice!  And who doesn’t love a free dinner for six?  đŸ™‚

Afterwards we tried to go rock climbing but it was closed.  Then we tried to go to a movie, but we had already seen the ONE kids movie that they were showing.  So as a last result we WALKED around the mall. If you know us at all, you know that we are NOT shoppers so this was a big deal.  We luckily found a toy story for the kids to look around in and both Brans and Dawson ended up finding some fun things to spend their birthday money from Nana and Papa and Grandma and Grandpa on.  Brans got an American flag USA pillow pet bear, and Dawson got a big stuffed Angry bird.  Branson’s purchase brought his total of pillow pets to FIVE now.  That kid is obsessed.  But to each his own.  I had a thing for bouncy balls when I was little. 🙂  And Barbies.

Adalynn love finding a big teddy bear bigger than herself.  She went and gave him a hug!

Adam and I had to laugh at some of the “artistic” statues and decorations around the mall.  Any ideas what this one might be?  A hand with legs and man parts holding cards on a dice?  Its a little too abstract for me!

Branson’s new American Pillow pet bear!  He creatively named him “Americo.”

As we were getting ready to leave the mall and head home, we happened upon this bungee jump type thing on a trampoline and decided to try it.  AND it was only 80 rupees per kid which translates to be less than $1.50 per kid.  A STEAL of a deal.  So each of the kids decided to try it.  Branson went first and I unfortunately only thought to take a video of him, but its probably a good thing because he was literally TERRIFIED of this thing and wanted to come down almost immediately.

Harry went next and was equally scared, but the guy maneuvering the bungee thing got smart and just lowered the bungee to the point that Harry could jump on the tramp and go really high.  Harry liked that much better and enjoyed himself after that.

Adalynn unfortunately was too little to ride but they let her just jump on the tramp for a minute while they got the harness on the boys.  She loved that and seemed content to just jump on her own.

The biggest shock and surprise though was this little guy.  He is usually our little fraidy-cat, at least when it comes to getting in water, but he absolutely LOVED this and had this big huge grin on his face the whole time and was laughing!  He even went all the way up as high as the bungee could go and jumped almost to the top of the building behind him.  Totally shocked Adam and I, but we were glad he enjoyed himself so much!

Right next door to the bungee jumping thing – they had a little Merry go Round which Adalynn talked us into letting her ride since she didn’t get to go on the bungee.  She loved it!

After the mall we headed home where Adalynn and I took naps while Adam and the boys went swimming at the pool.  Afterwards I attempted to make a dinner for us, but because my pots and pans and kitchen items still hadn’t arrived from our shipment its still pretty difficult for me to cook.  I did make up a garlic green beans dish with onion straws though, and then cooked up some corn on the cob and then cut up mangos, cantaloupe, and watermelon so that at least tied us over.  Then Adam and I put the kids to bed and watched a few episodes of Chuck before heading to bed.

That is one thing both of us are really missing is just “us time” at night.  Now that Adam is working from 1pm until midnight (most nights) we rarely get to just spend time together the two of us after the kids are in bed. And our mornings and afternoons are now filled up with “family time” with the kids.  Adam and I haven’t figured out how to do date night either since we don’t know anyone that babysits or that can handle four kids and then finding a time that works for Adam is difficult.  But hopefully we can find someone soon and start that back up. I think we both will need it to keep our sanity!  Or at least I will!  ha ha!

We sure do feel blessed to be having this amazing experience though and each day we are learning to adjust a little more and things are getting easier.  I’m sure by the end of our 3 months we’ll have almost everything figured out just in time to come home!  Isn’t that how life usually works?  We are grateful for the chances we have to learn and grow.  Life is good. Life is good.
