Black Sand Beach

Because we hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before at the hostel, Adam’s first line of attach that morning was to find us a new place for the rest of our trip that had A/C. And luckily he found one with a vacancy that would accommodate our family.  He arranged a taxi to take us there, but the taxi couldn’t come right away so we decided to go and do some exploring. We knew we were right next to a beach, but everyone told us it wasn’t a swimming beach, but that didn’t stop us from going to check it out.  We were SO glad we did!
Walking through the hotels property on the way to the beach.

We found these fun coconuts on the ground under some big palm leaves and had fun playing with them for a minute.

The hostel even had some fun birds that squawked at us pretty loudly!
We had to make our own trail to the beach that morning through some pretty high grass and bushes.  So Ady got a ride while I paved the way!

And when we got to the beach we discovered the coolest thing!  The sand was BLACK!  We just couldn’t believe it.  It was a first for both Adam and I.

The beach was a little dirty, and then rocky as you got closer to the waves, but the sand was amazing!  Not just the color but the texture.  It was probably the softest sand my feet have ever touched.  I am still wishing I’d picked some up to take home with me.

Cute Daddy and Ady toes!

Its hard to see in these pictures but right where those waves are in the distance is about a 3-4 foot ledge of ROCKS!  Aka. Why this isn’t a good swimming beach.  If you stayed on top of the rocks, there was no danger, but if you were to get down into the waves and get thrown against those rocks.  Watch out!  We opted to stay safely away from the rocks.

And we mostly just had fun playing in the black sand.

Adalynn started getting really mad every time the water touched her.  She is so funny.  Some days she loves the water and other days she despises it.

You can sort of see the rock cliffs better in this picture!  And we loved how the waves crashed against them spraying us!

It sure was a fun little adventure and one of the highlights for us in Sri Lanka!  It made all those frustrating moments GETTING to Sri Lanka worth it! 🙂
