On Friday (our last full day before heading home) we decided we’d better at least go on one big excursion and so we booked an all day tour to Tulum and Xel-Ha. Although I’ve been to the Cancun several times and seen most of the touristy sites, I had yet to visit Tulum, which I had heard is one of the most beautiful of the ruins, so we thought we’d check it out.
We ended up catching a bus at 7:00 in the morning Mexico time (5 am Utah time) and from there catching another bus out to Tulum. It took us about 2.5-3 hours to arrive in Tulum if I remember right, but luckily the drive went fast since both of us were super tired having to get up at the butt crack of dawn. But Tulum was beautiful and we had a lovely time. Adam especially loved hearing the stories of how the ruins were made and run, and what life was like back in the day for the Mayan people. Such interesting information.
We had a tour guide for the first hour we were at Tulum, and then were allowed to go exploring on our own. I much preferred being on our own than following a group around, but Adam LOVED listening to the stories and hearing all the history!
I was mostly just excited to get back to where you could see the water! Oh how Caribbean waters make me happy! Here I am sporting that 6.5 month belly again!
To even enter into the Mayan city you had to go through these really thick walls. This was on purpose back on the day to keep out intruders. There were only two entrances like this one in the entire city.
And here is a mini version of the entire city and how historians believed it looked back in the day. Cool!
