2 Hour Nose Bleed

One afternoon back in June while I was desperately trying to get packed up for a trip we were taking Dawson came walking into the kitchen saying he had a nose bleed.  I instantly went and grabbed a bunch of tissues to help clean him up as the blood was a constant drip but Dawson kept freaking out and HATED having his nose pinched and kept flailing his arms and head all over making things very difficult.  So after a few very frustrating minutes I made him a deal that he could watch a movie on my laptop if he would hold still.  Branson (bless his wonderful heart) went and got the laptop for me and with one hand I was able to get online, login to Netflix, and get a movie up and running for him while pinching his nose with the other hand.
Then I sat and held Dawsons nose for 5 minutes to see if we could get it to stop bleeding.  Nada.  Nothing.  It was still a continuous drip.  So then I held it another 10 minutes and still it dripped.  I ended up even googling what to do if you have a nose bleed that won’t stop and tried again holding his nose for another 15-20 minutes straight – all the while my wrists and fingers are starting to cramp up and hurt.  Darn tendinitis!  And although it did stop temporarily – it started back again less than 3 minutes later.  Ahhh.
So I googled again and read some more ideas and one mentioned putting a tampon up your nose.  Yuck!  But it did give me the idea to tightly roll up some toilet paper and stick that up there.  Dawson didn’t like it – but as long as he got to keep watching his movie – he tolerated it.  We literally tried that THREE times in half hour intervals trying to get that thing to stop.  And luckily it FInALLY worked after almost 2 hours of trying!
But unfortunately that didn’t stop the worrying for me and I kept wondering if my little boy had some disease or was malnourished or something else was wrong.  So I ended up calling the doctor who agreed it was unusual but his guess was that Dawson had probably just tried to pick his nose and nicked a blood vessel pretty good.  But the Doc. told me if it happened again to bring him in.
Since then we’ve had several other nose bleeds but luckily nothing quite so long – but we are about 98% sure it is indeed from the nose picking as that seems to be one of Dawsons new found habits!  Eck!  We’ve got a gold digger that is for sure! 🙂
This was after cleaning him up several times once we finally got it to stop.

    Hi Sarah,
I used to get bloody noses in high school a lot and the thing that works the very best is to take cyan pepper. I had a few really bad bloody noses that just would not stop and once I tried cyan pepper, they stopped within a minute. My mom would take a teaspoon and mix it with orange juice but I don't think a little kid would drink it because it is absolutely disgusting. I have found cyan pepper pills but you have to be able to swallow pills, and I don't know if a kid should take an entire pill. You could try hiding the powder in yogurt or ice cream or something. Cyan pepper thickens your blood, so does broccoli I hear. I hope this is helpful. Love ya!
