Car Troubles

For some reason the month of January brought a lot of crazy car adventures for our family.  Our first adventure started shortly after Adam landed home from a 5 day business trip to DC.  He had driven his truck up to the airport and was on his way home and had texted me to please keep the kids awake a little later than usual so he could see them.  But within a few minutes of that text, I got another one saying something along the lines of “Nevermind.  I’m stuck on the side of the road.  Gonna be home late.  Put the kids to bed.”  Say what?

I immediately called Adam and learned that he had heard some big Pop and then the truck had slowed down considerably so he pulled off the side of the road.  Then the truck began to smoke.  Aye yi yi.  Adam luckily was able to get a hold of my brother Luke who is a mechanic and was only 5 minutes away and Luke was able to come to Adam’s rescue.  He looked the truck over and concluded that Adam had broken the 4-wheel drive on his truck driving in it at high speeds.  Adam had apparently had it in 4 wheel drive on his way up to the airport 5 days earlier during a snow storm but forgot to take it out of 4 wheel drive when he reached the airport, and then forgot he was still in it.  Whoops.  The good news at least though was that Adam could still drive it home.  But his 4 wheel drive is now toast…

We had to laugh when the very next day we awoke to discover that MY cars back tire had randomly just gone completely flat.  As in not a single bit of air inside of it. Of course it landed on a day when I needed it too.  Ahhh.  Adam put the spare donut on for me though so that at least made it possible for me to drive short distances.  My husband is a rock star.

Then we had to laugh again when just this last week we had ANOTHER car adventure.  I’ll try to make it as short and sweet as possible.

TUESDAY:  Adam is trying to figure out how to take his truck in to get fixed but has an all day meeting and then dinner with his boss that night and isn’t sure how to swing getting from place to place without his car.  I suggest he take my car into work and then take his truck into the shop the next day when his schedule isn’t so crazy.  He agrees and takes my car to work.  Adam and I are supposed to go on a date that evening but have to cancel because of the impromptu dinner with the boss man.  We reschedule for Wednesday night.

WEDNESDAY:  I need to go grocery shopping and go and help out a friend but end up finding out that Adam had taken my car without telling me (even though he had said he was going to take the truck in to be fixed).  This is of course after I have all the kids ready with coats and shoes and my grocery list all printed out.
– Along with the car, Adam has also taken all the car seats leaving me stranded at home.  Ahhh!
– I end up having to reschedule everything with my friend and as I’m doing so I realize Dawsons forehead is blazin’ hot.  I take his temperature and it is 103.5.  Yikes.  Adalynn also feels warm and has a temperature of 100.9
– Due to both kids having fevers I end up calling Grandma to cancel our date night out…AGAIN.
– Halfway through the day I also realize that we had scheduled my sister and her family to come to dinner but because of the sick kids I text to cancel.  They want to come anyway though so I text Adam to tell him we will be having company for dinner.  Problem:  No food in the house for dinner due to earlier problem of Adam taking my car.  We have to get a little creative with our menu. 🙂
– Adam hasn’t arrived home by 6:00 (he usually gets home at 5:30). I call and text to see where he is and he hasn’t even left work yet (which is usually a 35-40 minute drive).
– Adam then texts about 6:20 that he can’t find my car keys and he’s stranded at work.  7 people help him search the parking lot but with no luck.  Keys are gone.
– Adam dashes over to the new rail train and experiences a tender mercy when the train shows up 20 minutes late JUST as he arrives.  He runs for the train and a kind man puts his hand in the doors to reopen then which allows him to make the train by the skin of his teeth.
– Adam then calls needing a ride home from the train station in Provo at 7:30 (mind you we still have company over whom I’m hosting by myself).
– My brother in law kindly offers to go and pick up Adam for me so I can continue entertaining guests.  I give him $20 in gas money.
– 8:00 Adam finally arrives home.  My sister and her family leave around 9.

THURSDAY:
– Adam wakes me up from a dead sleep needing me to hurry and take him to meet his car pool van because he can’t find a ride.  The trucks gas gage is on empty requiring me to stop to fill up.
– We make it in time for Ad to catch the van pool but then I get stuck trying to go up our hill in Adam’s now 4 wheel driveless truck.  My neighbor is also stuck (in her driveway) and I try to help her but am unsuccessful.  I end up driving around the entire block and approach our hill from the other side and finally make it home.
– TENDER MERCY happens:  Adam goes out to open my car up to have it towed and taken to a dealership (which was going to cost anywhere from $200-$450 and ends up FINDING the key next to the front tire on the drivers side.  Hurray!
– Adam’s big Adobe friends and family day is going on and so I scavenge up some car seats and use seat belts to take the  kids up to Lehi for the open house.
– When its time to leave Adam takes me to my car only to discover that he’d left the dome lights on the night before when looking for the keys and my car battery is now dead!
– Adam goes and gets his truck and is able to give me a jump start.
– We end the night by putting the kids to bed and getting a last minute babysitter at 8:45 to be a warm body at our house while we go and see the Hobbit at the Payson theaters.

And that hopefully is the end of our story. May our car trial adventures finally be OVER!!!!
