For the first two days of our trip to Steamboat Springs it was cold, rainy, and dreary – so we opted to either hang out at the condo or find activities that were indoors. We got online tripadvisor and discovered that Steamboat Springs had a few museums in town that might be worth checking out. We started at the free art museum on main street that was featuring cowgirl artwork and then after that we decided to hit up a pioneer museum that showed the history of Steamboat and had lots of pioneer memorabilia.
The kids outside the art museum
Adam thought this cowgirl looked like me so he made me take a picture by her.
Across the street they had another cool looking museum/store – but unfortunately it was closed and apparently only opened upon “request” or chance. ha! They had some cool statues though.
Then we hit up the pioneer museum where we were given a list of items we had to find sort of like a scavenger hunt for a prize at the end. It was actually pretty hard and required us to read almost everything in the museum to the kids – which I kind of liked. Forced us to actually LEARN the history and understand what we were looking at. Below are a few pictures we took with some of their costumes they had available for kids and families to play with.
This picture (although blurry) is of what Steamboat Springers call “The Lighted Man.” Each Winter they have a big winter carnival of sorts where people parade down the street in ski’s, and then in the evening they have the lighted man come down the mountain at the local ski resort. Pretty cool tradition!
We ended our afternoon by stopping at Wendy’s for some chocolate shakes (to go along with our PBJ sandwiches, veggies, and fruit, and then we took a nice leisurely drive up the nearby canyon where we drove up to two different lakes.
I was in heaven seeing all the fall colors and stopped the car a bazillion kazillion times to take pictures! Now if only my computer was working so I could photoshop the pictures to make them look like I remember them. The gray murky day sort of drowns out the colors as they really were, darn it all.
Adam loved this Mongolian Yurt we found in one of the campgrounds. He wants to come back to Steamboat Springs and stay in it someday. 🙂
When we got back into town Branson was really excited about these dinosaurs they had at the local gas station. He and Adalynn had fun on them while I filled the car.
That evening after naps and pizza for dinner we headed back down to spend some time in the pool. Unfortunately they had closed it for the day though, so we opted to do some swimming in the hot tub instead. Luckily we had the whole place to ourselves!
Dawson threw a full on tantrum about going to the pool with us (he didn’t want to – probably terrified of getting more swim lessons. ha ha.) but we couldn’t very well leave him home alone so he was forced to come with us. He was not happy about that though and wouldn’t leave the building so Adam stood outside and hid while I continued to walk away – hoping he’d come out on his own. He did eventually come out and changed his attitude around but he soon realized he hadn’t brought enough clothes to keep warm (He had refused to put any shoes or a coat on seeing as he didn’t want to go). So I let him use my ear warmer, scarf, boots, towel, and coat to keep warm. It was quite the funny site!
