Home from Washington and The Cantelope Story

As we were driving the last few hours of our 14 hour drive home from Washington on Saturday afternoon we received a phone call from Mum and Smurf (my wonderful in-laws) inviting us to dinner.  Adam’s cousin Logan was also coming for dinner so they thought it would be fun for us all to eat together.  Adam and I were dead tired from all our driving but we figured we could be dead tired up there just as easily as at home – and we missed them – so we decided to go up.  However, we had a few things we needed to do before we could make it up there (like grocery shop and unpack) since it was Sunday the next day – so we hurried home to run our errands.

Because I was so dead tired and sick of driving and didn’t want to spend another second in the car, Adam was kind enough to go and do our grocery shopping at Walmart.  He decided to take Branson with him leaving Harry, Dawson, and Adalynn home to help me.  Harry and Dawson did awesome and helped me unpack all our bags putting clothes and shoes and other things away where they went and then they helped get laundry going and the car cleaned out.

Afterwards Adalynn and I went outside and picked all the vegetables and fruits from our garden that had all ripened while we were gone.  We had tons of yellow and green squash, green beans, and peas and then even got one apricot, a bowl full of blackberries and a few raspberries as well.  Yum!  Adalynn was so cute in wanting to help and as I picked all the produce she would carefully put it in a grocery bag that she lugged around and then ask for “moe” (more) to put in.  So darling.  We ended up picking a ton of food and then took it inside to wash and put away.

I started sauteing and cooking up some zuccini and green beans for us to take to Mum and Smurfs for dinner and then thought it would be a good idea to clean out the fridge before Adam and Brans came home from shopping.  So I did that as well.

Adam and Brans came home just as I finished cooking and cleaning and we hurried and unpacked perishable items, and then loaded back in the car for Mum and Smurfs.  It was 7:15 at this point.

The CANTALOUPE STORY:

On the way to Mum and Smurfs though – Adam told us a story about Branson that had me laughing till my sides hurt.  Apparently when Adam and Branson were standing in line to check out after grocery shopping at Walmart, Adam remembered that he had forgotten to get cantaloupe which just so happens to be a favorite of all the kids (the kids would have one a day if I let them and we have gone through 7 in a weeks time before).  So he asked Branson to go and get 3 cantaloupe while he put everything up on the conveyor belt to check out.

However, Branson still hadn’t shown up by the time Ad was ready to pay and Adam couldn’t see him anywhere by peeking over the stalls in the store and looking towards the produce area.  So Adam paid, and then went back looking for Brans.  Still Adam couldn’t find him.  So Ad decided to retrace Branson’s steps from the produce area to the checkout counter and whala! Finally he found Branson standing in line to check out.  Only Brans hadn’t gone to get the three cantaloupe like Adam had asked…apparently he had misunderstood what Adam said and Brans had actually gone and gotten three gigantic WATERMELONS instead.  When Adam asked the checkout lady how Brans had gotten the watermelons by himself to the checkout counter – the lady told Adam that Branson had actually ROLLED them all the way from the produce area!  Ha ha!  So that’s why Adam hadn’t seen him.  Brans was bent over rolling watermelons all over the store trying to get them to the counter – not standing up where Adam could see him!!!!  So funny.  So that is our new Branson story.  We thought it definitely blog worthy.

We do have to say though that we were impressed with Branson’s creativity and follow through in figuring out how to get 3 watermelons to the checkout counter.  We probably would have used a cart – but its awesome to see how the brain of an 8 year old boy works.  His way was probably MUCH more fun! 🙂 Needless to say we only ended up with one of the watermelons but Adam did go back and get 3 cantaloupe.
