Indexing

Several years ago I had a wonderful friend named Karyn that sent me an email about indexing. She described how sometimes we Moms have a hard time getting to the temple when we have small little children. She then talked about how indexing helped her feel like she was able to do temple work everyday and how much joy it was bringing into her life. I remember being inspired by her words at the time, but due to my crazy school schedule, being pregnant, and trying to keep up with the two boys, housework, meals, and a very busy husband I wasn’t able to really do much at that time. And I sort of let the idea fade from my memory. Bless me heart. 🙂

However, ever since I finished my Masters degree in April I’ve had MUCH more time in my day and I’ve really been wanting to serve more and feel like I’m helping to do my part in the Lords kingdom. However, again I’ve run into similar issues that Karyn was having. Getting to the temple or getting out to serve with the the 3 little boys is really difficult for me.

However, one Sunday as I was sitting in Sacrament meeting, my darling husband Adam (who is in a Bishopric and was conducting that day) happened to mention that our ward had an indexing goal of 10,000 names and that our Stake had the goal of 100,000 names to be indexed and that volunteers were desperately needed to help index. And BAM! The spirit just hit me so strongly that THAT was what I could do to help. That Indexing was where I could serve. And I couldn’t believe how perfectly it fit into my day with my motherly responsibilities. It was amazing. Something I could do during the boys naps from home, or while Brans was at preschool, or in the few minutes before I went to bed at night. It was something I could spend 5 minutes doing, or 2 hours doing. Something I could leave if needed and pick up at a later time. Completely Flexible! In short, is was completely perfect for someone like me who is a mother and prone to having constant interruptions throughout my day by adorable little people.

So I had Adam give me a little refresher course on Indexing (he’s a pro) and off I went. And let me just say that it has been AMAZING! I too have felt so much joy and love being a part of helping others find their families and helping the temple gather names for people who need to have their work done. I have found that I can easily do 2-3 batches a day in my free time or around 100- 150 names a day. It usually takes me about 1 hour, and it makes me feel SO much better than when I spend that time reading blogs, facebooking, or surfing the internet. I have absolutely LOVED it. And it is SOOOO EASY! The site has step by step instructions on what to do and helps you all the way through it.

So I wanted to share this experience here on my blog with others in the off chance that maybe someone out there has been having similar feelings and has been looking for that one thing they can do that fits in with their busy Mommy/work or school schedule. And in order to make it SUPER simple, I’d also love to offer my help to get you started. If you are anything like me and get a little intimidated by new things than I would LOVE to help you and show you the ropes until you feel comfortable with how to do it. Its something I can easily do over the phone and walk you through. So if you’d like to learn more or get some help, please feel free to leave a comment, or email me at Sarahegbert@gmail.com

Or feel free to go and check it out on your own and ask me any questions. You can get started here: http://www.familysearchindexing.org/home.jsf

Hey Sarah – I decided to check out your blog!! I didn't know that you just got your Masters Degree! What did you get it in. That is so awesome. 🙂

This was a great idea of yours about indexing. We will have to discuss it when we get together with the kiddos.

You are so full of great ideas Sarah!! I'll have to look into that, it sounds like a great idea. I also was wondering, what program you use to make your blog book. I am doing one as well, but it is taking a long time. I just wondered if you may have an easier way. You seriously are amazing!!! Love you!!!
