India’s World Famous Banyan Tree

One of the sights we really wanted to hit on our drive to Mysore was the worlds biggest Banyan tree.  This tree is actually over 250 years old and actually covers about 4 acres of land.  It also has over 3300 aerial roots shooting down into the ground.  It really is quite amazing!  Unfortunately my camera died half way through our walk, but hopefully you’ll get a sense for how HUGE this thing is.  The interesting part though is that what you see isn’t actually the largest TRUNK of the tree.  The main trunk ended up being removed in 1925 after its main branches were damaged and it suffered from fungus and decay.  What you see in the pictures below are just the “other trunks” that have grown over the years.  Quite an amazing tree to say the least.  We invited our wonderful driver Naveen to come and explore with us, and he was just giddy to also get to see such an amazing sight.  He said he hadn’t visited the tree since he was a small boy around 5 years old.

One of my favorite parts was seeing the monkeys all over.  They weren’t tame, but they were sure fun to watch and you could get pretty close to them.  We actually ended up watching one try to open up a zippered bag on a motorcycle to try to steal food!

Nature really is so amazing!
