As I mentioned earlier Adam and I have been on a health kick since June after we watched the documentary “Forks over Knives.” One of the things we wanted to start doing was making our own bread where we could know exactly what ingredients were going into our bread. However, I really don’t have a lot of time to make bread being a busy Mom of four kids – and so I thought I’d try my hand at the bread machine. My parents graciously allowed me to borrow theirs so I could “test out” a bread machine before spending boo-koo bucks to buy one – and I’m SO GLAD I did. Because what I’ve found is that I pretty much STINK at making bread….even in a bread machine. Just look at the pictures below if you aren’t convinced. đ
The first loaf I made was a whole wheat bread and although it smelt delicious and looked delicious it was as hard as a rock. Not exactly what I was hoping for. So the next whole wheat loaf I made I put in some wheat gluten to hopefully help soften it up. It was MUCH better but still the taste was pretty blah. So I talked to a friend of mine (Susan) and she kindly gave me her Mom’s wheat bread recipe. I had high hopes for it – but as you can see in the pictures below…it didn’t do so well in the machine. I should have known as the directions where all for doing it by hand but I assumed the bread machine would figure it out. Nope.
The last loaf I made was probably the best. We used a recipe from a bread machine book and that did seem to help but again it wasn’t very tasty and it was kind of hard on the outside. The moral of the story is that I’m probably not going to be going out and buying a bread machine any time soon. I think I’ll still try my hand at it a few more times but so far I’ve flopped just as hard as you can flop. Just see for yourself below. All I could do was laugh my head off when I first took it out of the machine. I mean who is really THAT bad at making bread? In a machine? ME! Thats who! đ I think I am cursed when it comes to bread…
No that is not some yummy cream cheese filling in that bread. That is flour! And lots of it!
I think I now know why we always buy store bought rolls and bread in my family growing up. Maybe it runs in the family. đ
