After a quick nap back in our hotel room Mom and I decided it would be fun to head on over to the evening show at Xcaret. We’d heard it was one of the highlights of the park and something not to miss. And we found that to be about accurate. The show was 2 hours long and really was very well done. The first half of the show told the story of the Mayan people and the eventual takeover by the Spanish conquistadors. The second half of the show showed more of the Hispanic peoples culture in their music and dancing. It was incredible to see how the dancing and costumes had changed over the years and I loved all the bright colors and music. It really was very well done.
A view of the stadium from where we were sitting. Everyone was holding little candles out in the lower floors.
Not sure why this picture is so blurry but I like it anyway. Just me and my Mom!
This is a bit hard to see but the warriors on the right of the picture would bounce a ball using their hips to the warrior next to the circle on the left. Then the warrior on the left would try to hit it into the hole using his hip as well. Miraculously enough we actually got to witness 3 shots made! It was incredible!
This game they played using a ball that was on fire! It sort of resembled hockey where one team was trying to get it past the other teams goalie. They used sticks to move and pass the ball.
Here the conquistadors are coming in peace – and the Mayan people welcome them as they believe they are the “white God” that promised to come back to visit their people.
This picture shows some REALLY large costumes where people where wearing stilts. See the “smaller people” next to them? The costumes in the program were amazing!
Here are some of the different dances we saw. Sorry for all the blurry pictures. Everyone was moving so it was hard to get a good shot. But I loved all the bright colorful costumes.
Dancing with an octopus.
This was one of the highlights of the show. These guys were up on top of this HUGE long pole that went all the way to the top of the stadium. Then as you can see in the next picture they dropped down and swung in circles around the pole. Crazy!
More music and dancing.
We finished the night by going to one of the dinner buffets after the show and then heading back to our hotel room where we watched one of the dumbest movies either one of us had ever seen. I don’t even remember the name of it, but we laughed about that too. We sure know how to pick em’! We either cry our eyes out of laugh because they are so dumb! 🙂
