Shadow of the Giants in Nelder Grove

One of the places I wanted to take the kids while we were in California were to see the Sequoia trees in Kings Canyon which is home to some of the largest Sequoia trees in the world. However, Adam needed to work the day we would be driving near  to Sequoia National Park, and so I wasn’t sure how I would be able to pull it off. We considered dropping Adam off in a city nearby and then going through the park and coming back for him that evening, but it was going to add HOURS and HOURS of driving onto our already very long day and according to others I would literally just get to the park and then need to head back to get Adam. So then I though that maybe I could find a hotel or something IN the park that had cell and internet coverage, but from what others were saying, the internet was spotty at best.
In the end I had a very kind gentleman suggest that we go to a place called the Nelder Grove which was further north and not technically part of the National park but would cut down on driving time, and allow us to see SOME Sequoia trees (and the grove boasted to have the 4th largest Sequoia in the world). So it sounded like a win win! We ended up finding Adam a starbucks about 30 minutes from the Grove to work and then drove up the canyon to a place called the Shadow of the Giants. There we made up some sandwiches for lunch and then hiked the mile long trail through the forest. And although it wasn’t AS impressive as I remember Sequoia National Park being. It was still a FANTASTIC hike with some very beautiful trees. The kids and I all really loved it!

These were some of the smaller Sequoia trees.

I loved the moss growing on the side!

My pictures just don’t do these trees justice. They were ginormous!

Here is a better indication showing just how big these trees were!

And this one just makes me laugh! Boys and their becoming one with nature!

We so loved getting to see these huge beautiful trees!
