Back in mid October the kids had their annual fall break where they got a few days off of school. During the summer the Egbert side of the family had a big extended family reunion with Adam’s favorite cousins – the Hales – but unfortunately Adam’s very favorite cousin Kevin (who is his age) was unable to make it last minute when his car broke down and he and his family got stranded. The only solution was for them to stay where they were stranded and wait for their car to be fixed. All of us were SO disappointed. But, that just meant that we had a great excuse to go and visit them! So we penciled in heading out to Castle Dale Colorado for fall break in order to have us some Kevin and Teri Hales family time!
If any of you know me well, you probably know that although I LOVE traveling and seeing new places that I am not a big fan of long drives in the car with kids (mostly because I do all the driving and the kids get cranky, and because its exhausting!) But lucky for me I have a great husband who is really supportive of my feelings. And so we agreed to split up the drive and stay a night in Grand Junction which was about half way to Colorado.
We ended up leaving after Adam got off work Wednesday evening (Oct 14th) and then drove the 4 hours to Grand Junction where we rented two cheap hotel rooms for the evening. We ended up getting in just after the kids bedtime and so all we had to do was brush teeth and put them to bed and then Adam and I stayed up and watched a show or two before heading to bed ourselves.
The next morning we had a continental breakfast in the lobby of our hotel and then planned to take off for Castle Rock, but as we were leaving, Adam saw some signs for a National monument nearby and made the suggestion that we stop to see it. That ended up being a great idea, because it was actually really beautiful! And it only set us back about an hour. Nice! Pictures are below.
Here is the view of the actual Monument. I believe its called Independence Monument. Beautiful!
Loved seeing this beautiful mountain goat!
We sure did love our little side trip! From there we headed East toward Castle Dale and loved the drive on the way. Adam and I thought these mountains were amazing!
The canyons we drove through were so pretty.
We ended up arriving at Kevin and Teri’s mid afternoon – and had a blast talking and catching up. That evening we were greeted by this beautiful sunset.
